MAD. SQ. MUSIC: New York Night Train SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF featuring DJ Jonathan Toubin
With a visionary take on nightlife and an obsessively curated collection of obscure 7-inch records, Jonathan Toubin’s dance-contest has proven to unite even the squarest of weekend dance floors, offering a supreme one-of-a-kind experience to nightlife denizens everywhere. On July 29, Madison Square Park will host Toubin’s SOUL CLAP & DANCE OFF. The concept is simple – dancing to the 1960s soul and rock 45s of DJ Jonathan Toubin and, in the middle, a short dance contest determined by a community panel of judges, including special guest DJ, Randy Jones, the original cowboy from The Village People. Community judges for SOUL CLAP & DANCE OFF include Dee Dee Dame and Erin Sheehy (Soul Clap and Dance-Off Shadow Dancers), Jesse Malin (musician), Kam Franklin (lead singer of The Suffers), Keats Myer (MSPC’s Executive Director), Laurie Henzel (BUST Magazine editor in chief/cofounder), and Liana Le (celebrity hair stylist at Marie Robinson).
Kicking off the night are The Suffers, a ten-piece band from Houston, TX who are redefining the sound of Gulf Coast Soul, intertwining elements of Classic American Soul with Rock & Roll. Both sonically and visually arresting, the band’s sincerity and emotion are laid bare on their debut EP Make Some Room, which was released earlier this year. Bursting with vibrant soul, The Suffers bring you “10-piece southern funk where dancing isn’t optional (Esquire),” urging your heart to swell as you move your feet.
