Open Green Program 2018
Madison Square Park Conservancy uses the most effective practices to keep our lawns as healthy and sustainable as possible. We rotate lawns for use to make sure our turf can rest and receive deep watering, which helps with rooting so that the lawns can better coexist with surrounding trees. Occasionally we do need to close the lawns for aeration, seeding, and other general maintenance. This gives turf better access to water and CO2, two necessary components of photosynthesis. We also avoid using chemical fertilizers when possible, opting instead for organic alternatives that guarantee a slower release of nutrients, which is healthier for both turf and the environmental water supply. We do not spray pesticides on our lawns, preferring to remove weeds by hand if/when they spread and become problematic. Lastly, we do our best to seed bare areas regularly, so as to prevent soil erosion.
The Open Green Program was created in an effort to increase public access to our lawns and better communications. We hope to have at least three lawns open every day except for days that lawns are closed due to maintenance or weather conditions. Our Park team’s mission is to give our lawns the best care for their health, happiness, and longevity. Which is why we ask that when using the lawns, please use only picnic blankets with breathable materials, avoid sports play, keep dogs off the turf, and refrain from using chairs.
We thank you for your cooperation and hope you enjoy! Check out the lawn schedule below, or visit our Open Green signs for more information on which lawns are open and when.
