Madison Square Park Conservancy announces MAD. SQ. 200, presented by New York Life, a free event celebrating the 200th anniversary of the naming of Madison Square. Featuring a fair and contemporary art party, the event will take place in Madison Square Park on Saturday, September 6 from 3:00pm to 9:00pm.
Historic Daytime Fair, 3:00pm — 6:00 pm
The Historic Daytime Fair kicks off MAD. SQ. 200 with activities popular in the early 1800’s and 1900’s, including period-themed performances, interactive games, art, food, and refreshments highlighting these eras.
Join in with popular lawn games of the past two hundred years throughout the park, including Badminton/Shuttlecock, Croquet (adult and kids versions), Hopscotch, Marbles, Jump Rope and 1914-inspired Dice Game of Hearts.
The Museum of Interesting Things will have popular cultural items from the early 1900s on display, the New York Transit Museum will bring Betsy, a Fifth Avenue Coach Company double decker bus which ran in Manhattan from 1931 until 1953, and Leading Lady Costumes will highlight the clothing and fashion of the early 1800’s and 1900’s. The Cannibal Beer & Butcher will break down a whole hog and Brooklyn Farmacy will be handing out samples of their homemade sodas.
Performers will also include:
Mad. Sq. 200 Quartet, a string quartet with Alumni from the Juilliard School, will perform popular classical music of the early 1800’s, including Schubert’s Quartettsatz, Haydn String Quartet Op. 71 No. 2, and Cherubini String Quartet No. 1
The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, presenting a 1914-themed, traditional 3-person troupe featuring juggling, diabolos and spinning tops, whip cracking, and sword swallowing
Commonwealth Vintage Dancers, a troupe performing and demonstrating lively dances of the early 1800’s (intricate, yet simple, line dances) and early 1900’s (one-step variations such as the Grizzly Bear and the Lame Duck) in full costume
Kid Ace, an Illusionist/magician performing early 1900’s traditional magic
The historic fair transitions into an experiential, contemporary art party called TASK, from 6:00-9:00pm. For more information on TASK, click here.
