A Night of Cultural Music
Last night’s Mad. Sq. Music’s concert was filled with Brazilian and Ethiopian sounds, taking our audience on a journey from New York, to Brazil to Ethiopia, and back again.
Forro In The Dark kicked the night off with a high energy set of Brazilian forro. The 5 member band plays instruments such as the zabumba drum, pifano flute, guitar, and saxophone, plus brought special guest Alesia Bomtempo to perform a song with the rest of the group. FITD were not the only ones playing music, as audience members created complimentary sounds from their spoons and other objects.
Closing out the night were the infectious eleven-piece Debo Band who merged Ethiopian pop/Ethiopiques with American funk and soul. Continuing the festive atmosphere of the night, front men Bruck Tesfaye and Danny Mekonnen brought the park to their feet as they moved the band through their collection of grooves from their debut release. Crowds flocked to the front of the stage to experience the music up close.
Both bands gave an amazing performance that Mad. Sq. Music will never forget. We would like to thank the bands for coming out and performing on the Mad. Sq. Music stage.
