Sculpture Spotlight: Eternal Light Flagstaff
Not all of the commemorative sculpture in Madison Square Park depicts heads of state and local heroes — the park is also home to a monumental flagstaff that marks the site at which soldiers returned to New York from World War I. The Eternal Light Flagstaff was designed by Thomas Hastings with bronze ornaments by Paul Wayland Barrett. Dedicated on November 11, 1923, the top of the pole features a star — a symbol of the “eternal light” to which the monument’s title refers. The thirty-foot-tall flagstaff stands just north of the 23rd Street entrance to the park on Fifth Avenue — check it out!
