From June 20-25, and from June 27-July 2, Dancer Choreographers Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener of Danspace Project present a public movement practice called Desire Lines, through which they seek to navigate internal landscapes, external architecture, and public desire. They will lead fluid, group performances and workshops that incorporate Josiah McElheny’s Prismatic Park and its surrounding environment. Costumes will be designed for the occasion by George Venson/Voutsa, featuring painted patterns by Federico de Francesco. Look for them in the Park!

Make sure to pick up a free poster in the Park, featuring exclusive images provided by the artists and their residency schedule.

Josiah McElheny’s Prismatic Park will be on view from June 13-October 8. Prismatic Park will be used by three art non-profit organizations—Blank Forms, Danspace Project, and Poets House—to realize new and exciting works. When not occupied by resident artists, the public can access the exhibition as a platform for their own creativity. Look out for a free weekly poster available in the Park.

Since 2010 Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener have created dance in response to complex and active spatial environments, often merging elements of fantasy, absurdity, and quiet contemplation into challenging multifaceted performance. After working together for years in the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Mitchell and Riener developed a keen interest in the way abstraction and representation coincide in the body. Their collaborative work takes many forms, from site-specific installations, improvisational dances, and traditional proscenium pieces to highly crafted and intimate, immersive experiences. Historical influences and aesthetic forms collapse into a visually charged hybrid physical language. Together they have been part of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Extended Life Dance Development program, the New York City Center Choreographic Fellowship, and have been artists in residence at EMPAC, Mount Tremper Arts, Wellesley College, Jacob’s Pillow, and Pieter. Their work has been presented at MOMA PS1 as part of Greater New York, The Chocolate Factory, New York Live Arts, Danspace Project, the Vail International Dance Festival, REDCAT, ICA Boston, and the O Miami Poetry Festival.
