Davell Crawford, the “Prince of New Orleans,” brought soul, style, and song to bring the 2011 Mad. Sq. Music: Oval Lawn Series to a spectacular culmination. Davell’s energy and playful comments to the crowd immediately won him our affection. His powerful voice and virtuosity on the keyboard, piano, and organ earned him our admiration. Backed by a five-man band (and donning a pair of red shades), the Prince (not to be confused with Prince) performed an almost seamless set including Ray Charles’ classic hits, Georgia and Hit The Road, Jack. People of all ages sang along and danced as the sky dimmed and the fireflies lit up around them. And just like our concert series this year, the show was over before we knew it. The evening was a truly inspired, singularly original tribute and a perfect end to our season of summer concerts under the trees and stars.
